Basaglar® KwikPen is a long-acting insulin glargine used once daily to help control blood sugar. This page explains how it works, who it suits, and how to use it safely. You can buy Basaglar KwikPen online with Canadian pricing and US delivery from Canada, which may help if you pay without insurance.

Every CanadianInsulin order is prescription-checked with your clinic and dispensed by a licensed Canadian pharmacy.

What Basaglar® Is and How It Works

Basaglar is insulin glargine U-100. It is a long-acting basal insulin for adults with type 2 diabetes and for adults and children with type 1 diabetes. It provides steady background insulin over 24 hours when used as directed. We arrange US delivery from Canada through licensed pharmacies.

After subcutaneous injection, insulin glargine forms microprecipitates in the tissue. These slowly release small amounts of insulin into the bloodstream. This profile supports a stable fasting glucose day to day. It is not a mealtime insulin. Most patients continue rapid-acting insulin with meals in type 1 diabetes and sometimes in type 2 diabetes.

Who Basaglar Is For

Basaglar is indicated:

  • For adults with type 2 diabetes who need basal insulin.
  • For adults and pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes for basal coverage, with rapid-acting insulin for meals.

Do not use Basaglar for diabetic ketoacidosis. Seek emergency care for DKA and use IV insulin as directed by clinicians. Do not use in an insulin pump. Avoid if you have a known hypersensitivity to insulin glargine or any excipients.

Tell your clinician about kidney or liver problems, frequent low blood sugar, or changes in meal pattern or activity. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should review the label and discuss risks and benefits with their clinician.

Dosage and Usage

Use Basaglar exactly as prescribed. Your clinician will guide your starting dose and titration.

  • Type 2 diabetes: Many adults start at 10 units once daily or about 0.2 units/kg. Adjust based on fasting glucose targets per your clinician.
  • Type 1 diabetes: Basal insulin often provides about one-third to one-half of the total daily insulin dose. The remainder is rapid-acting insulin with meals.

Inject subcutaneously once daily at the same time each day. You may inject into the abdomen, thigh, buttock, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites within the same region to reduce lipodystrophy. Do not mix or dilute Basaglar with other insulins. Do not share pens, needles, or syringes.

Titration is usually stepwise over days to weeks. Your prescriber may advise small unit adjustments until fasting readings are at goal. Monitor glucose regularly. If you change diet, activity, or other medicines, contact your clinician about your insulin plan.

Strengths and Forms

Basaglar KwikPen is a prefilled 3 mL pen at 100 units/mL. Each pen contains 300 units. The pen delivers unit-by-unit dosing for flexible adjustments. Packaging and availability can vary by country and pharmacy.

Some patients use cartridge presentations with compatible reusable pens. If you and your prescriber prefer cartridges, see Basaglar® Cartridges. For broader shopping, explore Long Acting Insulin Pens available with US delivery from Canada.

Missed Dose and Timing

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is close to your next scheduled dose. Do not double doses. Keep to the same time each day when possible. Check your blood sugar more often after a missed or delayed dose and follow your clinician’s advice.

Storage and Travel Basics

Unopened pens are usually stored in a refrigerator. Do not freeze. Keep away from heat and direct light. In-use pens can generally be kept at room temperature for a limited period as stated on the product label. Discard pens past their in-use time window, even if insulin remains.

For travel, carry your insulin and supplies in your hand luggage. Use an insulated case if temperatures may be extreme. Keep pens capped when not in use. Always bring backup needles and glucose monitoring supplies.

Pen Handling and Sharps Disposal

Read the Instructions for Use before your first injection. Steps typically include:

  • Attach a new sterile needle. Remove both caps.
  • Prime the pen before each injection as directed to ensure insulin flow.
  • Dial the prescribed dose.
  • Choose the injection site and clean the skin.
  • Insert the needle and press the button fully.
  • Keep the needle in place for several seconds to deliver the full dose.
  • Remove the needle and recap carefully. Dispose of the needle safely.

Never share your pen, even if you change the needle. Use an FDA-cleared or local-approved sharps container. Follow community rules for sharps disposal.

Benefits

  • Once-daily basal insulin designed for steady, 24-hour coverage.
  • Helps reduce fasting blood glucose when used as prescribed.
  • Prefilled KwikPen offers unit-by-unit adjustments and portability.
  • Compatible with most daily routines due to flexible injection sites.
  • Clear labeling and a familiar delivery device across Lilly pens.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Common: low blood sugar, injection site redness or itching, weight gain, and mild swelling.
  • Other possible effects: lipodystrophy or skin changes at injection sites, rash, or itching.

Serious risks include severe hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, and rare severe allergic reactions. Fluid retention and heart failure may worsen when insulin is used with thiazolidinediones. Seek urgent care for severe lows or signs of allergy, such as widespread rash or breathing trouble.

The risk of hypoglycemia increases with skipped meals, increased activity, alcohol intake, or dose errors. It also increases with mealtime insulin or sulfonylureas. Always check labels, confirm doses, and carry a fast-acting glucose source.

Drug Interactions and Cautions

Several medicines can raise or lower blood sugar or mask symptoms of lows. Discuss changes with your clinician if you start or stop:

  • Beta-blockers, which can blunt the signs of hypoglycemia.
  • Thiazolidinediones, which can cause fluid retention.
  • Systemic steroids, some decongestants, and certain antipsychotics, which may raise glucose.
  • Alcohol, which can increase the risk of lows.
  • Diuretics, niacin, protease inhibitors, and others that affect glucose control.

Illness, stress, or changes in diet or activity can alter insulin needs. Monitor more closely during changes and follow clinician guidance.

What to Expect Over Time

Many patients see fasting readings improve within days of starting or adjusting Basaglar. Titration often continues over weeks until fasting glucose is on target. A1C changes reflect your overall plan and usually follow after several months. Stable daily habits and proper injection technique support consistent results.

Compare With Alternatives

Basaglar is a biosimilar insulin glargine U-100. It is clinically similar to other glargine U-100 products. Some patients and clinicians compare it with analogs in the same class or with higher-strength glargine.

Lantus® Solostar Pens contain insulin glargine U-100. They are a long-acting basal option with a similar daily dosing schedule. Patients may switch only under medical supervision with careful monitoring.

Toujeo® Doublestar is insulin glargine U-300. It uses a higher concentration that allows smaller injection volumes. Your dose is not unit-for-unit interchangeable when moving between U-100 and U-300. Always follow clinician guidance.

Availability and Substitutions

Supply can vary by location and pack size. If your chosen presentation is not available, your prescriber may recommend a therapeutically appropriate alternative in the same class. Some patients prefer cartridges; see Basaglar® Cartridges and discuss with your clinician before switching formats.

Patient Suitability and Cost Saving Tips

Basaglar may suit you if you need steady, once-daily basal insulin. It is often used when oral agents and lifestyle measures are not enough in type 2 diabetes. It is a standard basal choice alongside rapid-acting insulin for type 1 diabetes.

  • Not for use in an insulin pump or for treating DKA.
  • Not for patients with a known allergy to insulin glargine.
  • Review your hypoglycemia risk and goals with your clinician.

To save on cost, consider multi-month quantities if approved by your prescriber. Set up reminders so you never run out. Compare prices for Basaglar online, and review Canadian pricing with US delivery from Canada for potential savings.

Questions to Ask Your Clinician

  • What starting dose and titration schedule should I follow?
  • How should I adjust for fasting readings above or below target?
  • Which sites should I use, and how often should I rotate?
  • Do I need mealtime insulin with Basaglar, and how will we coordinate doses?
  • What is my plan to prevent and treat low blood sugar?
  • Will any of my current medicines affect my insulin needs?
  • If I switch from another basal insulin, what is the safest method?
