Enbrel® is a biologic medicine used to reduce inflammation in several autoimmune conditions. This page explains what it treats, how to use the SureClick auto injector, and how to access Canadian pricing with US delivery from Canada. Savings may help if you pay without insurance.

Every CanadianInsulin order is prescription-checked with your clinic and dispensed by a licensed Canadian pharmacy.

What Enbrel® Is and How It Works

Enbrel® (etanercept) is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor. TNF is a natural protein that drives inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and plaque psoriasis. By binding TNF, Enbrel lowers inflammatory activity and helps relieve joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and skin plaques. We provide US shipping from Canada to help you access treatment.

The SureClick auto injector contains a single dose for subcutaneous injection. It is designed for at-home use after your clinician shows you how to inject safely. Treatment requires a valid prescription.

For background reading, see our overview in Enbrel Etanercept Guide.

Who Enbrel® Is For

Adults may use Enbrel for moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and plaque psoriasis. Children may use it for moderate to severe polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and some may use it for chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis as directed by a specialist.

Explore related conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Plaque Psoriasis.

People with active serious infections should not start Enbrel. Those with untreated tuberculosis, recurrent infections, or sepsis must avoid it. Caution is needed in patients with demyelinating disease, heart failure, certain blood disorders, or a history of hepatitis B.

Dosage and Usage

Use Enbrel exactly as prescribed. Clinicians often follow these label-based regimens:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis: 50 mg subcutaneously once weekly.
  • Plaque psoriasis (adults): 50 mg twice weekly for three months, then 50 mg once weekly, as directed.
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis: weight-based dosing, commonly 0.8 mg/kg once weekly up to 50 mg maximum.

Inject into the thigh, abdomen (not within 2 inches of the navel), or outer upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate sites to reduce skin reactions. Do not inject into tender, bruised, red, or hardened skin.

If you are unsure about dose adjustments or timing, follow your prescriber’s instructions and the official label.

Strengths and Forms

Common presentations include:

  • SureClick auto injector: 50 mg per single-dose injector.
  • Prefilled syringe: 25 mg or 50 mg single-dose syringes.
  • Lyophilized powder for reconstitution: often 25 mg vials for specific indications.

Availability may vary by pharmacy and country. Your prescribed form should match your training and treatment plan.

Missed Dose and Timing

If you miss a weekly dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then resume your regular weekly schedule. If it is close to your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as scheduled. Do not double up doses. If your schedule changes, ask your clinic for guidance.

Storage and Travel Basics

Store Enbrel in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) in the original carton. Protect from light. Do not freeze or shake. Before injection, allow the autoinjector to warm to room temperature on the counter. Do not use external heat sources.

If needed, some presentations may be kept at room temperature for a limited time, as described in the product insert. Do not return to the refrigerator once stored at room temperature. Discard if the product has been out too long or looks cloudy, discolored, or contains particles.

When traveling, keep the medicine insulated and avoid extreme temperatures. Ask your clinic or pharmacist for written instructions. Cold-chain handling is used when required to keep your medicine within labeled temperatures during transit.

Pen Handling and Sharps Disposal

The SureClick auto injector hides the needle and is designed for one-handed use.

  • Check the label and expiration date before use.
  • Inspect the solution through the window. It should be clear to slightly yellow.
  • Choose a clean injection site and disinfect it with an alcohol swab.
  • Place the injector at 90 degrees against the skin. Press and activate as taught.
  • Hold in place until the indicator shows the dose is complete.
  • Dispose of the used injector in an FDA-cleared sharps container. Do not throw in household trash.

If you have questions about training, ask your care team for a refresher visit or instructional materials.

Benefits

Enbrel helps reduce joint pain, morning stiffness, and swelling. Many patients also see better physical function in daily activities. In plaque psoriasis, it helps clear skin plaques and may reduce itching and scaling. The SureClick device offers convenient at-home dosing, which may support steady adherence.

These benefits reflect labeled indications and studies. Individual responses vary.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Injection site reactions such as redness, itching, or swelling
  • Upper respiratory symptoms like cough or sinus congestion
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Rash or itching
  • Nausea

Serious risks include severe infections, tuberculosis reactivation, hepatitis B reactivation, blood disorders, demyelinating disease, heart failure worsening, and certain malignancies. Seek urgent care for fever, unusual bruising or bleeding, shortness of breath, persistent cough, severe weakness, or signs of allergic reaction. Your clinician should screen for TB before treatment and monitor for infections during therapy.

Drug Interactions and Cautions

Avoid live vaccines during treatment and shortly after stopping. Inactivated vaccines may be used but can have reduced response. Combining Enbrel with other biologic immunosuppressants, such as anakinra or abatacept, is not recommended due to higher infection risk. Use caution with other immunosuppressive drugs. Tell your clinician about all medicines and supplements you use.

What to Expect Over Time

Many patients feel symptom relief within several weeks, with further gains over months. Skin improvement in plaque psoriasis is gradual and often continues with ongoing treatment. Your clinician will monitor your progress and decide whether to continue, adjust, or switch therapy.

Compare With Alternatives

Several biologics are approved for similar conditions. Humira® is another TNF inhibitor with subcutaneous dosing and a long track record. Taltz® targets interleukin-17A and is used for plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, among others. Your clinician can compare mechanisms, dosing schedules, and suitability for your diagnosis and history.

Availability and Substitutions

Specific strengths or devices may be temporarily unavailable. Your prescriber may recommend a clinically appropriate alternative form, such as a prefilled syringe, or a different biologic if needed. Therapeutic substitutions should be directed by your clinician.

Patient Suitability and Cost Saving Tips

Good candidates include patients with moderate to severe inflammatory arthritis or psoriasis who have not responded well to conventional therapy. Avoid starting during an active serious infection. Let your clinician know if you have a history of TB, hepatitis B, demyelinating disease, heart failure, cancer, or blood disorders.

Cost-saving tips:

  • Ask about multi-month supplies to reduce per-unit cost.
  • Use refill reminders to maintain steady therapy and avoid rush orders.
  • Confirm whether your plan covers biologics or if you will pay cash.
  • Compare the price of SureClick injectors and prefilled syringes.

Questions to Ask Your Clinician

  • Is Enbrel the right first-line or add-on biologic for my condition?
  • What screening tests do I need before starting, including TB or hepatitis B?
  • How should I handle missed doses or dosing changes?
  • Which vaccines are safe while I am taking Enbrel?
  • What symptoms should prompt a call or clinic visit?
  • Can I switch between the SureClick device and a prefilled syringe?
  • How long should I continue therapy before assessing response?
