Uses of Diovan
Diovan, which contains the active ingredient valsartan and belongs to the category of medications called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), is commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure in both adults and children aged 1 year and older. It functions by relaxing blood vessels, reducing strain on the heart, and helping to prevent complications like heart disease and stroke.
Diovan is also prescribed for adults with heart failure, where the heart can’t pump blood effectively, and for those recovering from a heart attack to improve long-term results and reduce the risk of further cardiovascular events.
Precautions and Warnings
Avoid Diovan during pregnancy, especially in the second or third trimester, to prevent harm to the fetus. Use it with caution if you have kidney problems.
Stop Diovan if you have signs of an allergic reaction, like rash, itching, or trouble breathing. Furthermore, Diovan can result in low blood pressure. To minimize the risk of feeling dizzy, make sure to stand up gradually from a seated or lying position.
Tell your doctor about all medications you’re taking to avoid interactions with Diovan.
Dosage
Diovan comes in tablet form for oral use, with strengths ranging from 40 to 320 mg of valsartan. The usual initial dose is 80 mg per day, but may vary.
For pediatric hypertension (ages 6–16), the dose is weight-based with 1.3 mg per kg weight not to exceed 40 mg per day. This medicine is not recommended for children under the age of 6 or children with certain renal problems.
