Description

Uses of Micardis

Micardis, generic name telmisartan, belongs to the drug class of angiotensin II receptor blockers. It functions by preventing blood vessels from narrowing, thereby lessening blood pressure and improving blood flow. This medication is typically used to treat hypertension, minimizing the susceptibility to stroke or heart attack.  Additionally, Micardis is prescribed to individuals aged 55 and above with risk factors for serious heart disorders to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, or death from heart problems.

Precautions and Warnings

Micardis should be avoided during pregnancy, especially during the second or third trimester, as it may cause harm to the unborn baby. Individuals with diabetes should not take Micardis with medications containing Aliskiren. Micardis may lead to the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, resulting in kidney failure. Immediate medical attention is necessary if unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-colored urine occurs.

Dosage

For hypertension, the typical adult dose of Micardis is an initial 40 mg orally once a day, with a maintenance dose ranging from 40 to 80 mg orally once daily. The maximum blood pressure reduction is usually observed within 4 weeks of starting the medication. For cardiovascular risk reduction, the recommended dose is 80 mg orally once a day. Monitoring blood pressure is advised during initiation, with possible adjustments to other blood pressure-lowering medications if necessary.
