What is Humalog KwikPen?
The Humalog KwikPen is a type of insulin delivery device (insulin pen) for the use of Humalog Insulin Lispro. The KwikPen is a pre-filled, disposable insulin pen designed to make it easier for you to administer your doses of insulin. The pen is a convenient method that allows you to subcutaneously (under the skin) inject your dose without having to use a vial, needle and syringe. The package comes with 5 disposable insulin pens which contains 3 mL of Insulin Lispro.
What is it used for?
The Humalog KwikPen contains Humalog Insulin Lispro, which is a rapid-acting human insulin analog used to help control blood sugar levels in children and adults with diabetes mellitus. The KwikPen is used to help conveniently administer your Insulin Lispro dose without the uncertainty involved with proper injection technique, and the additional involvement of vials, needles, syringes, etc.
How does it work?
The Humalog KwikPen is pre-filled with Humalog Insulin Lispro, which is a man-made insulin analog that works similar to naturally occurring insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by beta cells in the pancreas, which is a large organ near your stomach. Insulin is primarily involved with the regulation of blood sugar levels by controlling the break down of food (sugars, fats and proteins) and promoting the absorption of sugar from your blood into your fat, liver and skeletal muscle cells.
The KwikPen has a compact size and simple design that allows you to manage your blood sugar levels at home or on the go with accurate, straightforward and convenient Insulin Lispro delivery.
Side effects
Common negative effects may include:
- Hypoglycemia
- Injection site reaction
Less common negative effects may include:
- Diabetic Acidosis
- Lipoatrophy
- Hypokalemia
The most frequently reported side effect of Insulin Lispro is low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include:
- fast heartbeat,
- excessive hunger,
- headache,
- nausea,
- dizziness,
- confusion,
- weakness,
- blurred vision,
- tremor,
- drowsiness,
- sweating,
- trouble concentrating,
- seizure (convulsions).
Skin site irritation (local allergy) in is also common. Swelling, redness and itching can happen at your injection site. In some cases, it may be related to things such as contaminants in the skin cleansing agent or due to your injection technique, and not the Insulin Lispro itself.
Diabetic acidosis can develop if your body has too little insulin. This may be brought on if you forget your insulin or take less than you doctor has prescribed, eat too much, or develop a fever or infection. The first symptoms typically come on gradually, over a period of hours or days, and include a drowsy feeling, thirst, flushed face, and loss of appetite. Heavy breathing and a quick pulse are more severe symptoms. If left without intervention it can result in the loss of consciousness, coma, or even death. If you experience any of these symptoms it is very important that you get medical assistance immediately
Rarely the subcutaneous injection of insulin can result in lipoatrophy, which is a depression in your skin or lipohypertrophy, the enlargement or thickening of tissue. If you notice any changes in, and around your injection site, or any of these conditions, contact your doctor immediately. Changing your injection technique might help get rid of any of these issues.
Other less commonly reported side effects can include hypokalemia, which is the presence of low levels of potassium (K+) in the blood, and more severe side effects can include anaphylaxis, which is a serious allergic reaction, and other hypersensitivity, or allergic reactions.
