Uses of Irbesartan

Irbesartan, marketed under the brand name Avapro, is a medication primarily prescribed to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). It belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), which work by relaxing blood vessels, thus allowing blood to flow more smoothly. Additionally, Irbesartan is often prescribed to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes and to reduce the risk of strokes in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy.

Precautions and Warnings

Before starting Irbesartan, it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, especially if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, heart problems, dehydration, or if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Irbesartan is not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby.

Additionally, caution should be exercised while using Irbesartan in elderly patients, as they may be more sensitive to its effects. It’s important to avoid alcohol consumption and excessive dehydration while taking Irbesartan, as it may exacerbate its side effects.

Dosage

The dosage of Irbesartan varies depending on the individual’s medical condition and response to treatment. Typically, the initial dose for hypertension is 150 milligrams once daily, which can be adjusted by your healthcare provider based on your blood pressure response.

For diabetic nephropathy, the starting dose may be 300 milligrams once daily. It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor and not to exceed the recommended dose without consulting a healthcare professional.
