Altace, the trade name for the generic medication ramipril, is classified under the drug category known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is mainly prescribed for treating high blood pressure (hypertension) and congestive heart failure. Using Altace to lower blood pressure can decrease the likelihood of experiencing strokes or heart attacks.

Precautions and Warnings

Avoid taking Altace with medications containing sacubitril or aliskiren. Inform your doctor about other medications you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions. To ensure that Altace is safe to use, tell your doctor if you have a history of the following conditions:

Liver disease
Kidney disease
Marfan syndrome (a connective tissue disease)
Electrolyte imbalance
Angioedema (a severe allergic reaction)

Altace should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the second or third trimester, as it can cause harm to the unborn baby.

Dosage

The dosage for Altace depends on the condition under treatment. These are as follows: For hypertension and diabetic nephropathy, the initial dose is 2.5 mg orally once a day. The daily maintenance dosage typically varies between 2.5 to 20 mg, taken orally once or twice a day in divided doses. For congestive heart failure, left ventricular dysfunction, and myocardial infarction, the initial dose is 2.5 mg orally twice a day. The maintenance dose is 5 mg orally twice a day.
