Uses of Altace

Altace, the trade name for the generic medication ramipril, is classified under the drug category known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is mainly prescribed for treating high blood pressure (hypertension) and congestive heart failure. Using Altace to lower blood pressure can decrease the likelihood of experiencing strokes or heart attacks.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Marfan syndrome (a connective tissue disease)
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Angioedema (a severe allergic reaction)
Altace should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the second or third trimester, as it can cause harm to the unborn baby.

Dosage

The dosage for Altace depends on the condition under treatment. These are as follows: For hypertension and diabetic nephropathy, the initial dose is 2.5 mg orally once a day. The daily maintenance dosage typically varies between 2.5 to 20 mg, taken orally once or twice a day in divided doses. For congestive heart failure, left ventricular dysfunction, and myocardial infarction, the initial dose is 2.5 mg orally twice a day.
