Glyburide and Alcohol

Glyburide and alcohol consumption

There is a known interaction between Glyburide and alcohol. If you are diabetic, drinking alcohol may affect your blood sugar levels. Depending on how much alcohol you consume, you may experience low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Therefore, you should avoid drinking alcohol in case your diabetes is not under control. Usually, moderate consumption of alcohol does not affect your blood sugar levels too much if you properly control your diabetes. However, it is advisable you reduce your alcohol consumption. If you are drinking alcohol, it is important you inform your doctor before you start using this medication. Your doctor may need to change your medication or closely monitor your blood sugar levels. Taking alcohol together with Glyburide may result in hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia symptoms include:

  • fatigue
  • blurred vision
  • increased thirst
  • increased urination
  • loss of consciousness
  • pale skin

If you notice any of these symptoms of hypoglycemia, you should call your doctor immediately. Taking Glyburide can also make you develop alcohol intolerance with symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, vomiting, nausea, low blood pressure and flushing. You should not stop taking this drug until you check with your doctor.
