Ozempic® is semaglutide, a once-weekly injection pen used to improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Order online from Canada with US delivery from Canada through CanadianInsulin. If paying without insurance, Canadian pricing can help lower your out-of-pocket cost.

What Ozempic® Is and How It Works

Ozempic® is a GLP-1 receptor agonist from Novo Nordisk. It helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high, lowers glucagon, and slows stomach emptying. These actions support better glycemic control alongside diet and exercise. It is not insulin and is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Some adults with established heart disease may also use Ozempic to reduce cardiovascular risk, per its approved labeling.

CanadianInsulin connects patients with licensed Canadian pharmacies. Prescriptions are verified with your clinic before dispensing.

Ozempic is given once weekly on the same day each week. The pen allows dose adjustments your prescriber may use to reach targets. It is not approved for weight loss.

Who Ozempic® Is For

Ozempic is indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes. It is commonly added when diet, exercise, and first-line medicines do not reach goals. See our Type 2 Diabetes resources for related therapies and supplies.

Who should not use Ozempic: anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. Do not use during episodes of pancreatitis. It is not recommended in pregnancy. It is not approved for children. Discuss use if there is severe gastrointestinal disease, a history of gallbladder problems, or diabetic retinopathy.

Dosage and Usage

Ozempic is injected under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, once weekly. Start at 0.25 mg once weekly for 4 weeks to help the stomach adjust. Then increase to 0.5 mg once weekly. If more blood sugar control is needed, many adults may increase to 1 mg once weekly. Some may advance to 2 mg once weekly as the labeled maximum dose. The 0.25 mg dose is for initiation and not for long-term blood sugar control.

Choose a consistent day of the week. If needed, the day can be changed as long as at least 48 hours have passed since the last dose. Follow the training in the patient guide included with each pen. For a deeper overview of weekly titration, see our editorial Ozempic Dosage Guide.

Strengths and Forms

Ozempic is supplied as multi-dose prefilled pens containing semaglutide solution. Availability may vary by lot and region. Common presentations include:

  • Ozempic 0.25 mg/0.5 mg pen for initiation and 0.5 mg maintenance
  • Ozempic 1 mg injection pen for ongoing therapy
  • Ozempic 2 mg/dose pen for maximum labeled dosing

These allow once-weekly injections and dose adjustments using the same device family. The active ingredient is semaglutide injection. Some prescribers may refer to a semaglutide injection 1 mg schedule. For more injectables in this class, browse Non Insulin Injectable Medications.

Missed Dose and Timing

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible within 5 days after the missed dose, then resume the regular schedule. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next dose on the regular day. Do not take two doses on the same day. Keep doses at least 48 hours apart.

Storage and Travel Basics

Before first use, store pens refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. After first use, store capped pens at room temperature up to 30°C (86°F) or in the refrigerator. Protect from heat and light. Discard a pen 56 days after first use, even if some medicine remains.

When traveling, carry the pen and needles in a protective case. Use cold packs to keep unopened pens cool. Keep the pen with you in a cabin bag, not in checked luggage. For practical tips, see Travel With Ozempic. Orders ship with prompt, express, cold-chain shipping when needed.

Pen Handling and Sharps Disposal

Review the manufacturer instructions before first use. General steps include:

  • Check the pen label and expiration date before each injection.
  • Attach a new needle for every injection; never reuse needles.
  • Perform the flow check before the first use of each new pen as directed.
  • Dial the prescribed dose. Insert into the skin and press the button fully.
  • Hold the pen in place per the guide to ensure the full dose is delivered.
  • Rotate injection sites to reduce skin reactions.
  • Remove the needle and dispose of it immediately in an FDA-cleared sharps container.
  • Do not share pens or needles.

Benefits

Ozempic helps lower A1C and fasting blood glucose when used with diet and exercise. It is taken once weekly, which many patients find convenient. It may reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease, per labeling. Pens offer clear dose markings and a simple injection process. It is commonly combined with first-line oral agents for additional control.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Decreased appetite
  • Indigestion or reflux
  • Headache or fatigue
  • Injection site reactions

Serious risks are less common but important: potential thyroid C-cell tumors (boxed warning), pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems from dehydration, and serious allergic reactions. Rapid improvements in blood sugar can temporarily worsen diabetic retinopathy. Hypoglycemia may occur when Ozempic is used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Seek urgent care for signs of severe abdominal pain, neck mass, hoarseness, allergic reaction, or symptoms of low blood sugar.

Drug Interactions and Cautions

Using Ozempic with insulin or a sulfonylurea increases hypoglycemia risk; clinicians often adjust those medicines when needed. Ozempic slows gastric emptying, which may affect the absorption of some oral drugs. Extra monitoring may be appropriate for medicines with a narrow therapeutic index. Do not combine with other semaglutide products or with another GLP-1 receptor agonist. For a broad overview of common drug classes used in diabetes care, see Common Diabetes Medications.

What to Expect Over Time

Blood sugar improvements usually build over several weeks as the dose increases. Many side effects, such as nausea, lessen as the body adjusts. Some people reach goals at 0.5 mg, while others need 1 mg or 2 mg. Your clinician will individualize targets and may adjust other medicines over time.

Compare With Alternatives

Other GLP-1 receptor agonists can be considered if Ozempic is not suitable or available. Weekly Trulicity® Pens (dulaglutide) offer once-weekly dosing with a single-use device. Daily Victoza® Pens (liraglutide) provide a once-daily option in the same class. Another option, tirzepatide, is a dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist that some prescribers consider for type 2 diabetes.

Pricing and Access

Buy Ozempic online with Canadian pricing and US shipping. This page helps compare Ozempic price and Ozempic cost across strengths. Many customers review semaglutide price when choosing a dose. If paying without insurance, some find a lower Ozempic cash price through CanadianInsulin. Out-of-pocket decisions often consider Ozempic out of pocket cost versus alternatives in the same class.

We also support those comparing active-ingredient options, such as buy semaglutide injection with a prescriber’s guidance. Semaglutide online from Canada is available with a valid prescription, and semaglutide ships to US addresses after verification. Checkout is encrypted for security. For occasional savings events, see our Promotions page.

Availability and Substitutions

Supply can vary by strength and package. If a specific pen is not available, a prescriber may suggest a different strength or an alternative in the GLP-1 class. Substitutions and dose changes should only be made by a licensed clinician. We do not provide restock dates.

Patient Suitability and Cost Saving Tips

Good candidates are adults with type 2 diabetes who need additional glycemic control and do not have contraindications. It is not for type 1 diabetes. It is not indicated for weight loss. Those with a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, severe GI disorders, or MTC/MEN 2 require careful evaluation.

Cost-saving ideas include considering a multi-month supply, aligning refills with other medicines, and reviewing benefits of each strength against goals. Compare Canadian pricing for the Ozempic 0.25 mg/0.5 mg pen, the Ozempic 1 mg injection pen, and the Ozempic 2 mg/dose pen to match coverage and needs. Coordinating refills can reduce shipping charges and help keep therapy on track.

Questions to Ask Your Clinician

  • Is Ozempic for type 2 diabetes appropriate with my current medicines?
  • Which weekly dose should I start with, and when should I increase?
  • How should insulin or a sulfonylurea change if hypoglycemia occurs?
  • What signs of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease should I watch for?
  • Is diabetic retinopathy monitoring recommended after starting semaglutide?
  • How long should I try a dose before considering a change?
  • Are there reasons to switch within the GLP-1 class?
