What are Humulin N KwikPens?
Humulin N KwikPen are pre-filled, disposable insulin pens designed to make it easier for you to administer your doses of insulin. It is filled with Humulin-N, which is a brand name for NPH insulin, otherwise called insulin isophane. It is considered an intermediate-acting insulin which has a relatively slow onset and a long duration of action that lasts up to 24 hours.
The Humulin N KwikPen is filled with Humulin-N, which is used for the control of high blood sugar in the treatment of diabetes. The KwikPen is compact with pre-filled doses, and does not need to be refrigerated once opened and in use, which makes it an easy and convenient way to administer your insulin needs at home or on the go.
Humulin N contains insulin isophane, also known as NPH insulin, which has been modified so that it can have a longer duration of action. It is classified as an intermediate-acting insulin and has a slower onset of action than Humulin R (about 90 minutes after injection) and a longer duration of effect that can last up to 24 hours. Intermediate-acting insulin is a background or basal insulin because it provides you with an entire day’s worth of blood sugar level control. Humulin-N is structurally identical to normal insulin but it has protamines, which are small proteins, mixed in to slow down its onset and expand its length of action to last the whole day.
Warnings and Precautions
It should not be:
- Taken intravenously
- Used in treatment of diabetic coma
- Used during episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
- Used if you are allergic to Humulin-N or any of the other ingredients
Tell your doctor if you:
- Have liver, kidney, or heart troubles or any other serious medical conditions
- Are taking any other prescription medications (especially TZDs [thiazolidinediones]) and any over the counter medicines, vitamins, or herbal supplements
- Are pregnant, are planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
Dosage
Your dose of Humulin N will likely be specific to you and adjusted based on your specific metabolic needs, blood sugar level monitoring results and blood sugar level control goals. Dosage adjustments may be needed if there are changes in your physical activity, meal patterns (such as nutrient content or timing of meals), in kidney or liver function or if you develop a serious illness. If you happen to be changing your insulin, including the strength, manufacturer, species, type, or method of manufacture, your doctor may need to change your insulin dosage.
Humulin N KwikPens are for subcutaneous (under the skin) injection only. Suitable injection sites include the thigh, upper arm, buttocks or abdomen. KwikPens are not to be refilled and are not designed for use with a syringe. Always read the “Instructions for Use” section before you start taking Humulin-N and each time you receive a new KwikPen. Never share your KwikPen with anyone, even if you have changed the needle. You may get a serious infection or disease from them or give other people a serious infection.
Unused KwikPens are to be stored in the refrigerator at between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Do not
freeze it. For KwikPens that you are currently using, store at room temperature (up to 86°F 30°C). Keep your KwikPen away from heat and light. Make sure to throw away your KwikPen after 14 days, even if it still has some insulin left in it.
The Humulin-N KwikPen is not recommended for use if you are blind or visually impaired without the help of someone trained to use the KwikPen.
