Humalog® Mix 75/25 KwikPen is a premixed insulin that helps manage blood sugar before and between meals. It combines insulin lispro protamine (75 percent) and insulin lispro (25 percent) in a prefilled, portable pen. Order from Canada with US delivery from Canada, and access Canadian pricing that may help if you pay out of pocket without insurance.

CanadianInsulin connects patients with licensed Canadian pharmacies. Prescriptions are verified with your clinic before dispensing.

What Humalog® Is and How It Works

Humalog® Mix 75/25 is a suspension of insulin lispro protamine and insulin lispro at 100 units/mL. The rapid component starts working around mealtime. The protamine component extends action to cover between meals and part of the night. This design supports meal coverage and background needs in a two-part dose.

The pen is for subcutaneous use only. Do not use this insulin in an insulin pump or give it by intravenous route. The liquid should look uniformly cloudy after gentle mixing. Do not use if it remains clear, has clumps, or shows particles.

Premixed insulin can be convenient for people following consistent meal patterns. For background on how premixes compare with separate basal and rapid insulins, see Premixed Insulin.

Who Humalog® Is For

This medicine is used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who need premixed insulin. It may be considered when a two-injection daily plan fits the eating schedule and glucose targets set by a clinician.

It is not for diabetic ketoacidosis. It is not for insulin pumps or intravenous use. People with frequent hypoglycemia, unpredictable meal intake, or significant kidney or liver impairment need careful professional guidance. Use in children should be decided by a clinician.

Dosage and Usage

Dosing is individualized. Many patients use Humalog Mix 75/25 twice daily within 15 minutes before a meal. Your prescriber sets the starting dose based on prior insulin use and current glucose patterns. Dose adjustments are guided by self-monitoring and clinical follow-up.

Basic steps:

  • Wash hands and inspect the pen and label to confirm insulin lispro mix 75/25.
  • Gently roll the pen between the palms 10 times and invert it 10 times until the suspension looks evenly cloudy.
  • Attach a new needle. Prime per the pen instructions until a drop appears.
  • Dial the prescribed dose. Inject subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, buttock, or upper arm.
  • Hold the needle in place for several seconds to ensure full delivery.
  • Rotate injection sites to reduce lipodystrophy.

Never share pens or needles. Follow your care team’s guidance on glucose checks, diet, activity, and sick-day plans.

Strengths and Forms

Common presentations include:

  • Humalog Mix 75/25 KwikPen prefilled pens, 100 units/mL (U-100).
  • 3 mL pens, typically supplied in a 5-pen pack (availability may vary).
  • Pen delivers in 1-unit dose increments.

For more options within our insulin pen selection, explore Insulin Pens.

Missed Dose and Timing

If you miss a dose, follow the plan provided by your clinician. In general, taking a catch-up dose late can raise hypoglycemia risk, especially if food intake will be reduced. Avoid taking two doses at once. Monitor blood glucose more often and contact your clinic for individualized advice.

Storage and Travel Basics

Unopened pens: Store in a refrigerator at 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F). Do not freeze. Keep away from heat and light.

In-use pens: Keep at room temperature below 30°C (86°F). Do not refrigerate an in-use pen. Discard the pen 10 days after first use, even if insulin remains.

Travel: Keep pens in a protective case. Do not leave in a hot car or in direct sun. Carry a backup pen, needles, a sharps container, and glucose sources for lows. Refrigerated items are shipped with cold-chain handling when needed.

Pen Handling and Sharps Disposal

Use a new needle for each injection. Prime before dosing. Insert the needle at the recommended angle per your training and hold in place for the instructed count. Remove and safely dispose of the needle after each use. Do not recap a used needle if it is unsafe to do so. Never share your pen.

Dispose of needles and used pens in a puncture-resistant FDA-cleared sharps container. Follow local or state rules for disposal. For practical tips on portability and technique, see Humalog Kwikpen Portable.

Benefits

  • Two insulin actions in one prefilled pen for dosing simplicity.
  • Mealtime coverage from insulin lispro with extended effect from lispro protamine.
  • Prefilled 3 mL pens reduce preparation steps compared with vials and syringes.
  • Clear, dial-a-dose design in 1-unit increments.
  • Canadian pricing with US shipping from Canada.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Hypoglycemia is the most common effect. Symptoms may include shakiness, sweating, fast heartbeat, and dizziness.
  • Injection site reactions such as redness, itching, or swelling.
  • Weight gain and peripheral edema may occur.
  • Lipodystrophy or skin thickening at injection sites with repeated use.
  • Allergic reactions including rash or itching.

Serious risks include severe hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, and rare severe allergic reactions. Fluid retention and heart failure can occur when insulin is used with thiazolidinediones. Use caution if you have kidney or liver disease. Always carry a rapid source of glucose for lows, and let your clinic know about severe events.

Drug Interactions and Cautions

Medicines that may increase hypoglycemia risk include other glucose-lowering agents such as sulfonylureas, meglitinides, and GLP-1 or SGLT2 therapies. Dose needs may change with corticosteroids, diuretics, niacin, or certain antipsychotics. Beta blockers, clonidine, and some others can mask warning symptoms of low blood sugar. Alcohol can raise or lower glucose and increase hypoglycemia risk. Consult your clinician and pharmacist when starting or stopping any medicine.

What to Expect Over Time

With a consistent meal plan and dose adjustments guided by your care team, many patients see improved fasting and post-meal readings. Expect early adjustments as you and your clinician review logs and patterns. Ongoing rotation of injection sites helps keep absorption steady. Regular follow-up and lab checks support long-term control.

Compare With Alternatives

Some patients may use a separate rapid insulin for meals alongside a basal insulin, rather than a premix. Others may prefer different delivery forms.

Rapid-only insulin lispro in a standard pen, such as Humalog® Kwikpen, offers flexible meal dosing with a separate basal insulin. If you prefer cartridges for a reusable pen system, Humalog® Mix Cartridges are another way to use the 75/25 formulation. For a broader comparison of rapid insulins, see the editorial overview Novolog Vs Humalog. Vial-and-syringe users may consider Humalog vial options if advised by a prescriber.

Availability and Substitutions

Availability can vary by pack size and strength. If a specific presentation is not in stock, your prescriber may suggest an appropriate alternative or different delivery form. Your clinic can advise on substitutions that match your dosing needs.

Patient Suitability and Cost Saving Tips

Humalog Mix 75/25 is best for patients whose meal timing is predictable and who can monitor glucose regularly. It may not suit those with highly variable schedules. Patients with a history of severe hypoglycemia require close supervision and education.

Ways to reduce costs and simplify refills:

  • Consider multi-month supplies if your prescription allows.
  • Set calendar reminders for reorders to avoid last-minute purchases.
  • Review your dose plan and logs with your clinician to minimize waste.
  • Discuss whether a premix or separate basal and bolus plan fits your daily routine.
  • For cartridge systems and related tips, see Humalog Cartridge Refills.

Questions to Ask Your Clinician

  • How should I time Humalog Mix 75/25 around my meals?
  • What glucose targets should I use for adjustments?
  • How do I treat and prevent hypoglycemia with this regimen?
  • What should I change during illness, fasting, or extra exercise?
  • Which injection sites are best for me, and how do I rotate them?
  • Would a premixed insulin or a basal-bolus plan fit my goals better?
  • When should I replace my pen and needles, and how do I dispose of them?
