Description

Uses of Tenormin

Tenormin, also known by its generic name atenolol, belongs to a class of medications called beta-blockers. It is prescribed to alleviate angina, which manifests as chest pain, and to manage hypertension or high blood pressure. Furthermore, Tenormin is utilized to diminish the risk of mortality following a heart attack.

Precautions and Warnings

Tenormin should be avoided if you have severe heart conditions like AV block, very slow heartbeats, or heart failure. It’s crucial not to suddenly stop taking Tenormin without consulting your doctor and to inform your surgeon if you’re undergoing any surgeries while on this medication.  Since Tenormin can cause side effects affecting alertness, caution is advised when driving or engaging in activities requiring focus. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may exacerbate drowsiness and dizziness.

Dosage

For hypertension, the starting dose of Tenormin is typically 50 mg taken orally once daily, with a maintenance dose ranging from 50 to 100 mg orally once daily.  For the prevention of angina pectoris and its treatment, the initial dose of Tenormin is also 50 mg taken orally once daily. The maintenance dose varies from 50 to 200 mg taken orally once daily. The maximum daily dosage for angina pectoris is 200 mg. In cases of myocardial infarction, the dosage regimen involves taking 50 mg orally twice a day or 100 mg once daily.
