Humira (adalimumab) is a prescription biologic medication that helps treat several chronic inflammatory conditions. As a monoclonal antibody, it works by blocking tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), a substance in the body that can cause inflammation. Humira is commonly used to manage autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and psoriasis.

Benefits:

  • Reduces inflammation and alleviates symptoms associated with autoimmune disorders
  • Improves joint mobility and reduces pain in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis
  • Helps achieve and maintain remission in inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
  • Minimizes the severity of psoriasis plaques and reduces skin irritation
  • Provides targeted treatment with fewer systemic side effects compared to traditional immunosuppressants

Dosage:

  • The recommended dose for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis is 40 mg every other week administered subcutaneously
  • For Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, an initial dose of 160 mg is given on Day 1, followed by 80 mg on Day 15, then 40 mg every other week starting on Day 29
  • For plaque psoriasis, the initial dose is 80 mg, followed by 40 mg every other week starting one week after the initial dose
  • Always follow your healthcare provider’s specific recommendations for dosage and schedule

Usage Instructions:

  • Humira is administered as a subcutaneous injection using a prefilled pen or syringe
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and clean the injection site with an alcohol swab before administering
  • Rotate injection sites to avoid irritation
  • Do not inject into areas of skin that are tender, bruised, red, or hard
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and resume your regular schedule

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Increased risk of infections, including serious bacterial, fungal, or viral infections
  • May increase the risk of certain cancers, such as lymphoma
  • Not recommended for individuals with active infections or a history of tuberculosis (TB) without prior treatment
  • Can cause allergic reactions; seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe rash
  • Regular monitoring for liver function, blood counts, and TB screening is recommended during treatment
  • Inform your healthcare provider about any vaccines or medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions

Storage Information:

  • Store Humira in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C)
  • Protect from light and keep in its original container until use
  • Do not freeze or expose to heat
  • If needed, Humira can be stored at room temperature for up to 14 days but must be used or discarded afterward

Common Side Effects:

  • Injection site reactions such as redness, itching, or swelling
  • Upper respiratory infections like sinusitis or bronchitis
  • Headache or nausea
  • Rarely, more serious side effects such as liver issues, blood disorders, or heart problems may occur; consult your healthcare provider immediately if you experience concerning symptoms
