Description

Uses of Valsartan HCT

Valsartan HCT, also known by its brand name Diovan HCT, is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Valsartan HCT combines two active components: valsartan, which serves as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic.Valsartan functions by dilating blood vessels, facilitating smoother blood flow, and consequently lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide helps the kidneys remove excess salt and water from the body, further lowering blood pressure. Valsartan HCT is typically prescribed when blood pressure is not adequately controlled by either medication alone, offering a synergistic effect for improved blood pressure management.

Precautions and Warnings

Avoid Valsartan-Hydrochlorothiazide if you have a known allergy to Valsartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfonamide-derived drugs. It is also contraindicated in patients with anuria (lack of urine production).Valsartan-hydrochlorothiazide should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, as it may cause harm to the fetus.

Dosage

The typical adult dosage of Valsartan-Hydrochlorothiazide depends on the specific strength of the combination tablet, usually ranging from 80 mg/12.5 mg to 320 mg/25 mg taken orally once daily.Dosage may be titrated after 1-2 weeks of therapy based on the patient’s response, with a maximum dosage of 320 mg of valsartan and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide per day.
