Coconut Water and Diabetes

One of the tastiest beverages that individuals with diabetes can follow is coconut water. Compared to its meat, the water that people can get from the inside consider a lot of micronutrients. Aside from being enjoyable, healthy, and savory, sipping coconut water is very beneficial.

Coconut water is a good substitute for maintaining hydration. It is also rich in sugar and electrolytes. Because of being a good source of fat and sugar, many people would say that coconut water is bad for diabetics; however, that is not true at all. Coconut water is still proven safe and beneficial for those who have been diagnosed with the condition.

Coconut water and sugar

There are two types of coconut water – sweetened and unsweetened. The sweetened coconut water has twice the amount of sugar as compared to the unsweetened varieties. It makes the sweetened type more harmful and dangerous for those who are already diagnosed with diabetes.

Meanwhile, the unsweetened type of coconut water is a better choice for those people experiencing high blood sugar levels. Since unsweetened coconut water does not contribute to diabetes, it is suitable for those who want to manage and control their condition.

Aside from sugar, coconut water is also a good source of different micronutrients, such as vitamin C, manganese, and potassium.

Effects on diabetes

One of the major concerns of being diagnosed with diabetes is how to improve a patient’s insulin sensitivity. After some research and studies, medical experts have arrived at a conclusion that micronutrients, such as magnesium, vitamin C, manganese, and potassium, can boosts such needed sensitiveness to better control diabetes. And which food or beverage fits the mentioned micronutrients? Well, thanks to the availability of coconut water.

However, just because coconut water is already indeed safe, it still has fat. That is why limiting the intake of this beverage is also necessary to control the amount of fat taken in by the human body.

Furthermore, always remember to only consume an unsweetened type of coconut water to ensure that your body’s blood sugar levels are still monitored the way your healthcare professional has asked you to do. Always include the amount of coconut water that you need to drink in a day, as there are still other types of food (which may contain calories and fat) for your daily consumption.
