What Jardiance® Is and How It Works

Jardiance® (empagliflozin) is an oral SGLT2 inhibitor used for adults with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar and reduce cardiovascular risks. It is a once-daily tablet available as 10 mg and 25 mg strengths. If you are comparing jardiance price or planning to order jardiance online, you can review options here. CanadianInsulin is a prescription referral service. Prescriptions are verified with your clinic, and orders are filled by licensed Canadian pharmacies. We work with licensed, vetted partners to source authentic brand medications with a broad selection and value-focused pricing.

By blocking the kidney’s sodium-glucose co‑transporter 2, empagliflozin helps your body pass excess glucose in the urine. This lowers A1C, modestly reduces weight and blood pressure, and supports cardiovascular health. In patients with established cardiovascular disease, Jardiance reduced the risk of cardiovascular death. Evidence also supports kidney protection and fewer hospitalizations for heart failure. See how SGLT2 therapy fits in modern care in How Sglt2 Inhibitors Are Changing Heart Failure Care and our overview Jardiance® For Kidney Disease Effective Protection Support.

Dosage and Usage

  • Start with 10 mg once daily in the morning, with or without food.
  • If additional control is needed and tolerated, increase to 25 mg once daily.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or split.
  • Hydrate well. SGLT2 inhibitors increase urination and may raise dehydration risk.
  • Check kidney function before starting and periodically during therapy.
  • Hold the medication during prolonged fasting, acute illness, or before major surgery (to reduce ketoacidosis risk), as advised by your clinician.
  • Missed dose: take it the same day when remembered. Skip if near the next dose. Do not double doses.
  • Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F); excursions 15–30°C (59–86°F) are acceptable.
  • Keep tablets dry in the original container with the desiccant.
  • Protect from excess heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
  • For travel, carry in your hand luggage with the pharmacy label.
  • Do not leave in a hot car. Keep away from children and pets.

Benefits and Savings

Jardiance supports A1C reductions of about 0.5–1% when used alone or with other agents. Many adults see 2–3 kg weight reduction over time and a small drop in systolic blood pressure. Cardiovascular outcomes trials showed fewer cardiovascular deaths and fewer hospitalizations for heart failure. Key studies highlight Jardiance heart failure benefits across ejection‑fraction ranges.

Convenience matters. Jardiance is a once‑daily pill (jardiance pill) available as jardiance 10 mg and jardiance 25 mg. It can fit into existing type 2 diabetes plans and supports long‑term risk reduction. Typical customers save 60–80% compared with many US retail prices, which can ease jardiance cost over time. If you compare jardiance cost with medicare or jardiance cost with insurance, transparent pricing helps you plan refills.

See our promotions page for current offers, including any jardiance coupon if available.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Genital yeast infections (more common in females and uncircumcised males)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Increased urination and thirst
  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Dehydration, dizziness, or low blood pressure
  • Raised LDL cholesterol (small increase in some patients)

Serious but uncommon risks include ketoacidosis (which can occur even with near‑normal blood glucose), severe urinary infections, or rare necrotizing infections of the perineum. Volume depletion may occur, especially in older adults, those on diuretics, or those with kidney disease. Hypoglycemia risk rises when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea; dose adjustments of background agents may be needed. Discuss symptoms and safety plans with your healthcare provider.

Onset Time

Glucose lowering begins within the first 1–2 weeks, with A1C changes clearer by 8–12 weeks as dosing stabilizes. Weight effects are gradual over several weeks to a few months. Cardiovascular and heart failure benefits can appear early, with reductions in hospitalization risk observed within weeks in trials, and sustained with continued therapy.

Compare With Alternatives

Other SGLT2 inhibitors include Farxiga® (dapagliflozin) and Invokana® (canagliflozin). These offer similar A1C reductions and heart failure benefits. Differences include labeled indications, kidney function thresholds, and adverse event profiles. Choice often depends on clinical history and tolerability.

GLP‑1 receptor agonists such as Rybelsus® (oral semaglutide) or Trulicity® (dulaglutide) provide stronger average A1C and weight effects. They are often paired with SGLT2 therapy when additional control or weight reduction is desired. Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is another option that combines glucose control with notable weight effects. Selection depends on goals, side effect profiles, and insurance coverage.

Read more about heart outcomes with SGLT2s in How Sglt2 Inhibitors Are Changing Heart Failure Care.

Combination Therapy

  • Metformin + Jardiance: a common foundation to lower A1C and weight.
  • Basal insulin + Jardiance: consider reducing insulin dose to lower hypoglycemia risk.
  • GLP‑1 RA + Jardiance: complementary effects on weight and cardiovascular risk.
  • Sulfonylurea + Jardiance: monitor and reduce sulfonylurea dose if lows occur.
  • ACE inhibitor or ARB for kidney protection: see Ramipril or Losartan.
  • Selected CKD patients may also use non‑steroidal MRA therapy such as Kerendia per clinician guidance.

Patient Suitability and Cost-Saving Tips

Jardiance is used for adults with type 2 diabetes and for risk reduction in select cardiovascular or heart failure settings. It is not for type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Caution is advised with recurrent urinary infections, volume depletion, or significant kidney impairment. Review pregnancy, breastfeeding, and surgical plans with your clinician.

Cost‑saving ideas include choosing multi‑month supplies, coordinating refills to reduce shipping frequency, and comparing strengths (empagliflozin 10 mg vs empagliflozin 25 mg) for your plan. Ask about jardiance generic availability; a generic of jardiance is not yet widely available, but you can track empagliflozin price when generics launch.
