Xultophy is a prescription combination medication used to manage type 2 diabetes. It contains insulin degludec (a long-acting basal insulin) and liraglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist) to help regulate blood sugar levels throughout the day. Xultophy is administered via a prefilled injection pen and is typically used alongside diet and exercise to improve glycemic control.

Benefits:

  • Combines insulin and a GLP-1 receptor agonist for better blood sugar control.
  • Provides 24-hour blood sugar regulation with a once-daily dose.
  • Helps reduce A1C levels while minimizing the risk of low blood sugar.
  • May assist with weight management in some patients.
  • Convenient prefilled pen for easy administration.

Dosage:

  • Inject once daily at the same time each day, with or without food.
  • Initial dose and adjustments depend on your doctor’s prescription.
  • Maximum daily dose is 50 dose units.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Not for use in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
  • May increase the risk of thyroid tumors—avoid if you have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when used with other diabetes medications.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart disease.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Usage Instructions:

  • Check the pen before each use and ensure the solution is clear.
  • Attach a new needle, then prime the pen by dialing 2 units and pressing until a drop appears.
  • Dial the prescribed dose as instructed by your doctor.
  • Inject subcutaneously into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.
  • Rotate injection sites to avoid skin irritation.
