Diabetes: Nausea and Vomiting

Share Post:

Nausea is a common medical symptom that people undergo once diagnosed with different health conditions. It is when individuals experience a sudden feeling of sickness, especially in the stomach region. The said condition or symptom is always associated with vomiting, sometimes recurrent or frequent.

Usually, people who experience nausea and vomiting are those who are diagnosed with diabetes. These two symptoms are the major signs that the blood sugar levels are either low or high. These concerns are either be caused by diabetes treatments and even other health complications linked with diabetes.

Causes of Nausea

Type 1 Diabetes

This condition refers to the malfunction of the pancreas, where it becomes unable to produce the needed insulin that the body needs to control its levels of blood glucose. Other than nausea, its symptoms also include recurrent urination, unexplained thirst and hunger, weight loss, extreme weakness, blurry vision, vomiting, and bed-wetting.

Type 2 Diabetes

This is a chronic type of condition that affects how the body stimulates and regulates its blood glucose usage. It also impairs the functions of the pancreas and opposes how the cells operate by responding defectively to insulin. Aside from nausea and vomiting, its other symptoms are fatigue, blurry vision, numbness in some areas of the body, rapid weight loss, unexplained thirst and hunger, frequent urination, and darkened skin.

Hyperglycemia

Also known as high blood sugar, hyperglycemia happens when the status of the blood glucose is HIGHER than the normal levels. This phenomenon occurs when the production of insulin becomes low or the pancreas isn’t producing enough of the hormone. Other than nausea, its signs and warnings also include shakiness, blurry vision, headaches, seizures, and irregular heartbeat.

Hypoglycemia

Opposite to hyperglycemia, this condition is also known as low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia happens when the status of the blood glucose is LOWER than the normal levels. This condition occurs when the body has too much insulin supply, without the cells responding normally towards the hormone. Other than nausea and vomiting, its signs and warnings also include irregular heartbeat, stomach ache, mild headache, episodes of seizures, and lightheadedness.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis

When the body has produced remarkably high levels of ketones (blood acids), DKA or diabetic ketoacidosis happens. It is a severe health complication triggered by diabetes mellitus. The condition becomes more complicated when the ketones build up in the body is left untreated. Other than severe nausea and recurrent vomiting, its symptoms also include severe stomach pain, extreme weakness, confusion, shortness of breath, excessive thirst, and fatigue.

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is recognized as an inflammation involving the pancreas. When this occurs, the organ’s function in producing insulin is affected. Aside from nausea and vomiting, its symptoms are mild pain in the abdomen, fever, tenderness in the abdomen, and weight loss.

Medications for Diabetes

There are diabetes medications that can cause nausea and vomiting. One of the reasons for this condition is when patients take their daily medicine on an empty stomach. While these symptoms are normal, they can become severe and will cause other health complications to emerge. With regards to this matter, healthcare professionals tend to adjust the dosage as well as the prescription medicine.

Takeaway

Nausea and vomiting can be manageable at home. There are in-home remedies that individuals can do to stop these conditions. First-aid can be performed at home when these conditions occur. However, if these conditions become recurrent, it is time to contact the doctor and obtain immediate medical attention. Other than diabetes, nausea and vomiting can be symptoms of other medical conditions or complications associated with diabetes.
