Chromium and Insulin

Which mineral enhances insulin activity?

Insulin is a hormone that regulates the level of glucose in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition wherein an individual’s body cannot properly absorb insulin, which leads to unregulated levels of blood glucose.

Studies have shown that an essential mineral called chromium plays a positive role in regulating insulin activity. This is particularly true for people with Type 2 diabetes, who might have lower levels of chromium in their blood than people who do not have the condition.

Mechanism of action of chromium

There is still some mystery surrounding chromium, as an enzyme containing chromium has yet to be discovered. However, chromium shows the ability to enhance or potentiate insulin’s actions. This is believed to be due to the mineral’s ability to increase the number of insulin receptors, increase the binding of insulin to the receptors, and increase insulin receptor activation when insulin is present.

Chromium dosage for enhancing insulin activity

Studies show that taking supplements containing chromium can enhance the metabolic action of insulin. Chromium picolinate has specifically been singled out as a mineral that helps reduce insulin resistance in individuals with Type 2 diabetes.

Clinical trials show that supplements containing between 200 and 1,000 mcg of chromium (as chromium picolinate) should be taken daily to help improve control over blood glucose levels.
