What Wegovy® Is and How It Works

Wegovy® (semaglutide) is a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist for chronic weight management. It is indicated for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (BMI ≥27) with at least one weight-related condition. It is also approved for adolescents 12 years and older with obesity based on age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles. Many people search for wegovy cost without insurance; CanadianInsulin focuses on value and clear options so patients can plan their therapy.

CanadianInsulin is a prescription referral service. Prescriptions are verified with your clinic, and orders are filled by licensed Canadian pharmacies.

Semaglutide mimics the hormone GLP-1. It enhances satiety, reduces hunger, and lowers energy intake. It also slows gastric emptying and supports better glycemic control in those with type 2 diabetes. In adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity, Wegovy reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.

Pens are single‑dose, prefilled, and designed for subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm once weekly, on the same day each week.

Partner pharmacies are licensed and vetted, supply authentic brand medications, and offer a broad selection with value-focused pricing.

Dosage and Usage

  • Initiation and titration (typical): 0.25 mg once weekly for 4 weeks, then 0.5 mg weekly for 4 weeks, then 1 mg weekly for 4 weeks, then 1.7 mg weekly for 4 weeks, and then 2.4 mg weekly as the maintenance dose.
  • Titration helps improve tolerability. Some patients may remain at 1.7 mg if not tolerating 2.4 mg.
  • Use the pen once, then discard in a sharps container. Each pen delivers a single fixed dose.
  • Administration sites: abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate sites with each injection.
  • Choose a consistent weekly injection day. If needed, change the day, ensuring at least 48 hours between doses.
  • Missed dose: If the next scheduled dose is more than 48 hours away, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If less than 48 hours remain, skip the missed dose and resume on the next scheduled day. After two or more missed doses, contact a clinician; re‑titration may be considered.
  • Do not use with other semaglutide-containing products or with another GLP‑1 receptor agonist.
  • Storage: Refrigerate unopened pens at 2–8°C (36–46°F). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep the cap on.
  • Room temperature option: Unopened pens may be kept at 8–30°C (46–86°F) for up to 28 days. Do not return to the refrigerator once kept at room temperature.
  • Handling: Do not shake. Inspect the pen; do not use if damaged or if solution looks discolored or contains particles.
  • Travel: Use an insulated bag with cold packs for long trips. Keep pens with you in carry‑on luggage. Avoid direct heat or leaving pens in a parked car.
  • Disposal: Place used pens in an approved sharps container. Follow local guidelines for disposal.
  • Shipping: Orders ship with prompt, express, cold‑chain handling to maintain product integrity.

Benefits and Savings

Wegovy supports meaningful, sustained weight loss when combined with diet and activity. Trials showed average weight loss around 15% at 68 weeks in adults with obesity or overweight. Many people also see improvements in cardiometabolic markers such as waist circumference, blood pressure, and lipids.

The once‑weekly schedule reduces daily burden. Single‑dose pens remove dose dialing and simplify weekly use. Gradual titration helps improve gastrointestinal tolerability over time.

In adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity, Wegovy reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke). This benefit adds to its role in comprehensive risk reduction alongside diet, activity, and guideline‑directed medical therapy.

Many customers save 60–80% vs typical U.S. prices. This can help those comparing the cost of Wegovy without insurance to domestic options.

See our promotions page for current offers, including any wegovy coupon if available.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Common effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, belching, heartburn, and decreased appetite.
  • Other reported effects: headache, dizziness, fatigue, injection-site reactions, and mild increases in heart rate.
  • GI effects are usually transient and improve as the dose increases gradually.
  • Hypoglycemia can occur when used with insulin or sulfonylureas; dose adjustments of those agents may be needed.

Serious but less common risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease (gallstones, cholecystitis), acute kidney injury (often with dehydration), and worsening diabetic retinopathy in people with type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide carries a boxed warning for thyroid C‑cell tumors. Do not use in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Avoid use during pregnancy. Discuss all medications and conditions, including prior pancreatitis, with a healthcare professional.

Onset Time

Appetite changes can begin within the first few weeks as titration starts. Early weight changes often appear within 4–8 weeks, with more consistent reductions by 12–16 weeks as the dose escalates toward maintenance. Weight loss typically accumulates over 6–12 months, then plateaus as energy balance stabilizes.

For those with type 2 diabetes, glycemic effects may be seen within weeks, and A1C improvements follow as steady-state levels are reached. Individual timelines vary based on dose, adherence, diet, activity, and concomitant therapies.

Compare With Alternatives

Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is a once‑weekly GIP/GLP‑1 receptor agonist indicated for type 2 diabetes. It can deliver strong glycemic and weight effects in diabetes care. Wegovy is specifically approved for chronic weight management and for reducing cardiovascular risk in certain adults with overweight or obesity. For a broader overview, see Wegovy Vs Mounjaro How These Weight Loss Drugs Work.

Trulicity® (dulaglutide) is a once‑weekly GLP‑1 receptor agonist for type 2 diabetes. It offers cardiovascular benefits in diabetes and once‑weekly convenience, but it is not approved for chronic weight management.

Rybelsus® (oral semaglutide) is taken daily for type 2 diabetes and may suit those who prefer tablets. It is not approved for weight loss. Compare features and goals with a clinician to decide the best fit. You can also review our article Rising Mounjaro Costs How To Save On Weight Loss Drug for additional context on value.

Combination Therapy

  • Common background therapies: metformin, SGLT2 inhibitors, statins, and antihypertensives as part of cardiometabolic care.
  • With insulin or a sulfonylurea, a dose reduction of the background agent may help lower hypoglycemia risk.
  • Do not combine with another GLP‑1 receptor agonist or with other semaglutide products.
  • Review all medications that may be affected by delayed gastric emptying; adjust timing if needed under clinician guidance.

Patient Suitability and Cost-Saving Tips

Candidates include adults with BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with at least one weight-related condition such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, or type 2 diabetes. Adolescents 12 years and older may qualify based on pediatric criteria. Adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity may use Wegovy to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy or while planning to conceive. It is contraindicated in individuals with a personal or family history of MTC or in those with MEN 2. Use caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, significant gastrointestinal disorders, kidney impairment, or diabetic retinopathy.

To manage expenses, consider multi‑month quantities when appropriate, which can reduce per‑shipment costs. Align titration strengths in one shipment. Plan refills ahead to avoid rush shipping. Set gentle reminders for weekly dosing and reordering. Explore Weight Management and Obesity resources for education and support.
