Janumet and Weight Loss

Share Post:

What is Janumet?

Janumet is a combination of two prescription drugs that includes Januvia and Metformin. Metformin and Januvia are both oral diabetes drugs that are used to control blood glucose levels. Metformin works by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed by the intestines. Januvia works by increasing the levels of the natural substance known as incretins. Incretins help to control the amount of glucose produced after eating a meal. This medication can be used together with exercise and diet to reduce high blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It should not be used to treat people with type 1 diabetes. You should not use this medication if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis or have a serious kidney problem.

How to take it

You should take this medication with food to avoid stomach upset. Janumet extended release (XR) tablets should not be broken, crushed or chewed. Instead, swallow the tablet whole. To reduce the risk of side effects, your doctor may require you to start at a lower dose and then increase it gradually. Take this medication regularly so that you can benefit the most from it. To remember your dose, make sure you take it at the same time every day. As you take this medication, it is important you check your blood sugar levels regularly. In case of drug overdose, you should stop taking this medication and seek medical attention immediately.

Symptoms of overdose include:

  • diarrhea
  • rapid breathing
  • irregular heartbeat
  • severe drowsiness
  • severe nausea

Janumet and weight loss

Some studies have shown that Janumet can cause weight loss. The drug contains the active ingredient metformin, which is known to reduce weight in people who are obese and improve obesity-related conditions. Currently, there is no evidence to show how metformin helps people lose weight, but one theory suggest that metformin can reduce a patient’s appetite, which makes them eat less. In addition, metformin works by changing how your body uses and stores fat. However, if you take Janumet and do not follow a proper diet plan and exercise routine, you will likely not lose any weight. Those who exercise regularly and follow a healthy eating plan tend to lose the most weight.

Doctor’s Recommendation

For cost-saving purposes, it’s preferred to prescribe metformin and Januvia separately.
