Uses of Hyzaar

Hyzaar is a combination medication containing hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic (water pill), and losartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It is primarily prescribed to manage hypertension (high blood pressure) by lowering blood pressure levels. Additionally, Hyzaar is utilized to reduce the risk of stroke in specific individuals diagnosed with heart disease, particularly those with left ventricular hypertrophy. This medication works by preventing the body from absorbing excess salt, which aids in reducing fluid retention and blood pressure. Additionally, it helps in preventing blood vessels from narrowing, improving blood flow, and reducing the workload on the heart.

Precautions and Warnings

Before starting Hyzaar, inform your doctor about any allergies or existing health conditions such as kidney or liver problems, diabetes, or heart conditions. Due to potential risks to unborn babies, Hyzaar should be avoided during the second or third trimester of pregnancy, and breastfeeding should be abstained from while using this medication. Seek medical attention if experiencing unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with fever, unusual tiredness, and dark-colored urine.

Dosage

The usual adult dose for hypertension is hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 to 25 mg combined with losartan 50 to 100 mg orally once a day.
