What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine used to manage weight loss in obese adults or individuals with weight-related issues. It belongs to a drug classification called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which works by lowering appetite and reducing calorie intake. Wegovy is available under the generic name Semaglutide.
Uses of Wegovy
Wegovy is used in adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet program and regular exercise. It has similar properties to Ozempic, which has shown efficacy in weight loss management. It works by curbing appetite, which prevents unwanted cravings and unhealthy overeating.
This injectable treatment is administered subcutaneously under the skin once per week. It prevents the development of obesity-related conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
Wegovy is also an incretin mimetic, an agent that copies incretin hormones’ functions. It stimulates insulin release, improving blood sugar regulation. Type 2 diabetes patients can benefit from using this medicine.
Warnings and Precautions
Do not use Wegovy if you are allergic to it or its ingredients. Obtain immediate medical care if you experience symptoms of allergic reactions, such as inflammation and swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, skin rashes, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
To ensure that Wegovy is safe to use, tell your doctor if you have/had:
- Kidney disease
- Eye problems
- Pancreatitis
- Mental health issues
Dosage
Wegovy is available in the following strengths:
0.25mg/0.5ml
0.5mg/0.5ml
1mg/0.5ml
1.7mg/.75ml
2.4mg/.75ml

6.8mg/3ml
9.6mg/3ml
For the starting dosage, inject 0.25 mg of Wegovy once per week.
After 4 weeks, the dosage will increase to 2.4 mg. If the patient cannot tolerate this dose, it may be temporarily decreased to 1.7 mg once per week.
