Eliquis

Eliquis (apixaban) is a modern anticoagulant used to reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke in individuals with atrial fibrillation (not caused by a heart valve problem), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or pulmonary embolism (PE). It works by targeting a specific clotting protein, factor Xa, to ensure effective prevention of clot formation. Eliquis offers a simpler and more convenient alternative to traditional anticoagulants like warfarin.

Dosage:

• For DVT and PE, the starting dose is 10 mg twice daily for the first 7 days, followed by 5 mg twice daily.
• After surgeries, the preventive dose is usually 2.5 mg twice daily.
• Always follow your doctor’s instructions for dosing based on your specific condition.

Warnings and Precautions:

• Avoid Eliquis if you have active bleeding or a known allergy to apixaban.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you take, as certain drugs can interact with Eliquis.
• Be cautious about activities or conditions that increase your risk of bleeding, such as surgery or injuries.
• Watch for signs of bleeding, including unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding, or dark stools.
• Patients with kidney or liver impairment may require adjusted doses or alternative treatments.

Usage Instructions:

• Take Eliquis at the same time each day, with or without food.
• Do not split, crush, or chew the tablets. Swallow them whole.
• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double up on doses.
• Avoid discontinuing Eliquis without consulting your doctor, as this increases the risk of stroke or blood clots.

Storage Information:

• Store Eliquis at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
• Keep it in its original packaging to maintain effectiveness.
• Ensure the medication is out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.

Common Side Effects:

• Minor bleeding, such as nosebleeds or bruising.
• Nausea or stomach upset.
• Fatigue or dizziness.
• Rare but severe side effects include significant bleeding, black or tarry stools, or signs of an allergic reaction like swelling or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
