Types of diabetes. Today, there are three known types of diabetes – type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. However, did you know that there are over three types of diabetes? Let us find out here!
List of other types of diabetes mellitus
Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY)
MODY is a form of monogenic diabetes and develops because of a genetic mutation. This change in genetics affects the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin. MODY is diagnosed early in life, with thousands of cases witnessed under 25. Research says that MODY is present in 5% of people with diabetes.
Symptoms of MODY include:
- Increased thirst and hunger
- Frequent urination
- Blurry vision
- Yeast infections
- Weight loss
- Fatigue/Tiredness
Type 3c diabetes
Type 3c diabetes happens when the pancreas stops making insulin, affecting blood sugar regulation. Damage in the pancreas leads to this condition, especially after pancreatic surgery or organ removal. Type 3c diabetes is also known as pancreatogenous diabetes mellitus.
Symptoms of type 3c diabetes include:
- Rapid weight loss
- Upset stomach
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Itchiness in the genitals
- Blurry vision
- Frequent thirst and urination
- Dizziness
Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)
LADA is an autoimmune diabetes that develops in adulthood. Since it is an autoimmune condition, it has similar attributes to type 1 diabetes; however, the disease also shares genetic and metabolic features with type 2 diabetes. That is also why it is called type 1.5 diabetes. LADA is commonly diagnosed in individuals 30 to 50 years old.
Symptoms of LADA include:
- Visual changes
- Fatigue
- Tingling in the feet
- Weight loss
- Frequent urination
- Increased thirst
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Drowsiness
Brittle diabetes
Brittle diabetes is a type of diabetes that is hard to manage and control. It causes frequent episodes of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, leading to hospitalization. The constant instability of blood sugar associated with this condition gives this condition two other names – labile diabetes or unstable diabetes.
The symptoms of brittle diabetes are hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, including:
Hyperglycemia:
- Frequent urination
- Excessive thirst
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Blurry vision
Hypoglycemia:
- Shakiness
- Chills
- Blurry vision
- Nausea
- Seizure
- Unconsciousness
- Irritability
- Confusion
- Irregular heartbeat
Neonatal diabetes
Neonatal diabetes is monogenetic diabetes that develops in the first six months of newborns. Like MODY, this type is also caused by genetic mutation and affects the organ-producing insulin. Research says 20% of babies with neonatal diabetes experience developmental delay and repeated seizures.
Symptoms of neonatal diabetes include:
- Dehydration
- Rapid breathing
- Frequent urination
- Increased appetite
- Inability to gain weight
- Dry mouth
