What are the side effects of Wegovy?

Share Post:

Wegovy is an FDA-approved medication designed to aid in weight loss. It is prescribed for individuals who are obese or have weight-related medical issues. Each week, it is administered to different bodily sites, such as the abdomen, thighs, and upper arm. Like other weight loss medications, Wegovy may cause side effects, which can range from common to severe in nature.

The most common adverse reactions of Wegovy are:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Low blood sugar
  • Injection site reactions such as pain, redness, or itching

Other serious side effects of Wegovy include:

Severe allergic reactions. Call your healthcare professional immediately if you experience symptoms like swelling of the face, severe skin rash, chest tightness, dizziness, peeling skin, and difficulty breathing. These are common allergic reactions from Wegovy. Before you start taking Wegovy, please ensure you are not allergic to its components.

Thyroid tumor or cancer. While rare, it’s important to note that thyroid tumors or cancer may develop while using Wegovy. If you notice a lump on your neck or experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing, please notify your healthcare professional right away.

Vision change. If you notice a problem in your eyesight, such as blurry vision, it could be a side effect of Wegovy. Report your condition to your doctor urgently.

Pancreatitis. Inflammation in the pancreas can lead to severe abdominal pain. Discontinue Wegovy if you experience pain that lasts for an extended period.

Suicidal thoughts. Besides the physical side effects of Wegovy, your mental health can also be compromised with Wegovy. If you observe an unusual change in your mood and behavior and have thoughts of suicide, call your medical assistance.

Note: Some side effects can go away instantly. However, obtain immediate medical attention if they persist longer and affect your daily activities.

Doctor’s Recommendation

Luckily, patients do not have to worry too much as these side effects are rare, and it is the physician’s job to screen patients who are at high risk of thyroid tumors and acute pancreatitis.
